Dragon Glass Dagger

Game of Thrones

Transparency With Artificial Light
Transparency With Natural Light

The first actual commission for Strange Brit Props, this was one of the most challenging things I've made to date (September 2016).

Sculpted out of cardboard and body filler, I made this dagger as close to the screen used one as I could in size and shape, but added my own look to it by making it look like the shape had been formed by chipping away at a block of Obsidian (the material the daggers in the show are made of) rather than the look of almost melted rock seen on screen.

I then cast it in pigmented transparent Polyester resin. It was the first time using both Polyester resin and pigments so it took a couple of attempts to get the transparency the way I wanted, as the first one ended up being solid black in colour. But that just meant I got one for myself!

Because I forgot to take photos for my portfolio before sending the original dagger off to the client, I decided to cast another dagger, but this time I used slightly less pigment and added a twine wrap to the handle, completing the transformation from spear head to dagger.
